It is celebrated in China every year on November 11 because the date written as 11/11 is reminiscent of ‘bare branches’, a Chinese term for bachelors. In 2009, Chinese marketplace giant Alibaba launched its first Singles Day promotion. Last year, they sold more than $1 billion in merchandise in the first three minutes, making it a bigger shopping day than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined!
